Sustainability Committee

Purpose: 

The Sustainability Committee advises the mayor and city council on policies pertaining to citizen education programs relating to sustainable environmental practices and responsible stewardship of Ogden’s natural resources.

Interest Form:

Anyone with interest in serving on the Committee is welcome to submit an interest form that will be considered as openings occur. Those who submit interest forms will be contacted only as openings become available.

Organization:

Committee members are appointed by the mayor with advice and consent of the city council. The Sustainability Committee consists of 7 to 9 voting members, up to 3 voting student members and 2 non-voting members. The committee includes:

  1. One (1) member from the business or education community;
  2. One (1) member from each of the four (4) municipal districts, when possible;
  3. Up to four (4) members from residents of the city at large;
  4. Up to three (3) high school student members;
  5. One non-voting member representing city sustainability staff; and
  6. One non-voting member from the city council staff.

Terms: 

The terms for the committee are for 3 years, which are staggered for initial appointments. Committee members are expected to attend meetings on a regular basis. The Committee may recommend removal of a committee member for attendance below 75% of scheduled meetings over an 18-month period.

Duties/Powers: 

Educational Programs: The Sustainability Committee shall act in an advisory capacity to the city council and the mayor in all matters pertaining to educational programs relating to environmental sustainability and responsible stewardship of natural resources, specifically including, but not limited to, the following:

      1.   Waste reduction and recycling;

      2.   Disposal of hazardous materials;

      3.   Power and water conservation;

      4.   Air quality impacts; and

      5.   Open space maintenance.

Policies and Programs: At the request of the council or mayor, the committee may recommend environmental policies and programs that will assist the city in becoming a more sustainable community.

Grants: Identifying opportunities for city grant funding applications relative to environmental sustainability and stewardship of natural resources.

State and Federal Programs: Encouraging city pursuit of state and federal support for sustainability and natural resource conservation programs.

Additional Action and Duties: Taking such other actions as appropriate to effectuate the foregoing, and performing such other duties as assigned by the city council or the mayor.

Serve in Advisory Capacity: The committee shall serve in an advisory capacity to the city council and mayor. The committee shall address issues and assignments as directed by the city council or mayor, but shall not have policy adoption or enforcement authority.

Sunset: 

The council extended the sunset provision for the Sustainability Committee to December 31, 2024.
